Child Protection and Education
Child protection and education are of utmost importance, especially in the context of the ongoing Anglophone Crisis in Cameroon. This crisis has had a devastating impact on vulnerable groups, particularly girls and children. One of the most alarming consequences is the denial of education to children living in hotspots, leaving them susceptible to various forms of exploitation.
The absence of educational opportunities for these children exposes them to a multitude of dangers. Many are at risk of being recruited into armed groups, engaging in criminal activities such as banditry, or becoming involved in drug addiction and nocturnal sales. The economic hardship faced by communities affected by the conflict has led to the displacement of teenage boys, girls, and children who end up in major towns, where they may resort to activities such as banditry, living on the streets, or engaging in exploitative practices such as sex work.
The lack of access to education also has severe consequences within school settings. Children who have been denied an education often display aggressive and violent behavior. They may resort to acts of vandalism, consume drugs, and harass school staff. Additionally, the prevalence of corporal punishment in schools has been on the rise, further compromising the well-being and rights of children. Moreover, there are instances of arbitrary arrest and the abuse of fair trial rights, specifically targeting teenagers and minors.
Recognizing the urgency of addressing these issues, MDDT Cameroon has prioritized programming on Civilian Protection and Human Rights. Central to their efforts is the promotion of the right to education in conflict-affected areas. To achieve this, MDDT has been instrumental in establishing community schools and prison schools that cater to teenagers who are incarcerated.
Furthermore, MDDT Cameroon is dedicated to developing innovative mechanisms to protect the fair trial rights of minors. They actively advocate against the use of children as shields in times of war, as well as their exploitation in radicalization, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. By raising awareness about these grave issues and advocating for change, MDDT aims to safeguard the well-being and future of children in Cameroon.
Through our comprehensive approach, MDDT Cameroon strives to create a safe and nurturing environment for children, ensuring their protection from the various threats they face in conflict-affected areas. By providing educational opportunities, advocating for fair treatment and rights, and addressing the root causes of exploitation, MDDT plays a crucial role in breaking the cycle of violence and vulnerability for children in Cameroon
